Green Ammonia – Early phase concept study and Permitting Management, Eydehavn

Norconsult is supporting North Ammonia AS in an ongoing early phase concept study regarding ammonia production and ship bunkering at Eydehavn, east of Arendal. The plant is North Ammonia’s first green hydrogen and ammonia production facility. The first phase of the facility is planned to be operational in mid-2027 with up to 100 000 tons of green ammonia in annual production capacity.

Assignment

Norconsult assists in development of the ammonia pipeline calculations, pipe simulation, concept design, ammonia bunkering technology and bunkering operations. The preparation of technical concept details is to be used in cost estimation of CAPEX & OPEX.

Solution

Norconsult supports the client in early phase developing the of the plant. This work includes establishing a complete project concept covering input from the system suppliers, balance of plant with storage and ship bunkering / offloading systems. The delivery included a qualitative risk assessment for the overall concept used in a project “red flag” review.

Norconsult has entered into a frame agreement for Permit Management and Engineering in order to secure required permits. This includes work required under the following acts: 

  • Plan and Building Act
  • Fire and Explosion Protection Act
  • Water Resources Act
  • Pollution Control Act
  • Working Environment Act

Result

The project commenced in 2021 and is currently approaching a FEED phase.

Final investment decision is planned to be in early 2024.
Currently, preparatory civil works are to be carried out for the construction and installation of the electrolysis and ammonia production plant, including utilities and storage facilities.
