Norconsult designs power lines, transformer stations and high-voltage systems at 420 kV (transmission network) and 132 kV (distribution network) – and calculates the climatic loads they have to withstand. We work for power producers and grid utilities, as well as for industry and the transport sector.
What do we design?
Our specialists cover power lines, cable design, power transformers, high-voltage switchgear, and control and protection systems. We support projects through all phases, from early studies to detailed engineering.
Overhead lines and towers
We carry out detailed engineering design of composite and steel towers for high-voltage lines, calculate the line profile in the terrain, and specify the electromechanical equipment.
Dimensioning a line correctly means knowing what it will be exposed to. We deliver site-specific climatic load assessments for overhead power lines, covering extreme wind, ice and wet snow loads, combined wind-icing load cases, and the design statistics needed for reliable and cost-effective line design.
Using high-resolution weather modelling and measurements, we calculate design loads in accordance with the Eurocodes. We model rime icing, wet snow and freezing rain globally, including in remote areas with limited measurement data.
Our work in this field includes long-term framework agreements with Statnett and national ice load mapping projects in Norway, Sweden and Türkiye.
Masts and towers
The same methodology applies to telecommunication masts, towers and other tall structures. We assess site-specific wind and ice loads to help ensure safe and cost-effective design in cold and temperate climates, and have applied the method to more than 200 wind measurement masts and numerous telecommunication towers across the Nordic region.
Transformer stations
Norconsult covers all engineering disciplines and supports you through every project phase in transformer station design. We design the building around the function of the high-voltage system.
We have a thorough understanding of the design criteria for 420 kV, 132 kV and 22 kV high-voltage systems, transformers, and protection and control – ensuring good functionality, safe future operation and compliance with regulatory requirements in energy projects.
Cable systems
We perform engineering design for cable systems in all types of terrain, in culverts and in drilled tunnels. We have the experience and expertise to make the right calculations for installations within wind power, industrial facilities, and the regional and transmission network.
