Assignment
Norconsult was engaged by Skellefteå Kraft AB to carry out a FEED study for a full-scale Bio Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) plant at their biomass-powered combined heat and power plant at Hedensbyn.
The purpose of the study was to establish a basic design of the entire plant, from CO2 capture at the site to export at the port facility. In addition to the basic design, the FEED study aimed to establish CAPEX and OPEX estimates for the entire facility.
Solution
Norconsult developed a design around a Hot Potassium Carbonate (HPC) CO2 capture design developed in the feasibility phase.
The solution is centered around two separate facilities: capture and conditioning adjacent to the bioenergy plant, and liquefaction, purification, and storage at a port facility. These two facilities are connected by a 14 km pipeline transporting the captured CO2.
Norconsult simulated and designed all the process stages with a particular focus on energy efficiency, low emissions and safety.
Norconsult also held a HAZOP workshop together with the client to further establish and maintain safety in the future plant.
Norconsult contributed with all relevant disciplines in this project.
Result
The FEED study established the basic design and cost estimate of the full-scale plant. This enables Skellefteå Kraft to make a final investment decision and creates the basis for future detail engineering.
