As part of Rogaland County Municipality’s preparations for the detail design of the bridge, Norconsult assessed the probability of ship allision and defined the design ship impact energies.
The probability assessment was performed using Norconsult’s in-house software for ship allision assessments, which performs a Monte Carlo simulation of the ship traffic to calculate the probability of ship allision against a specified area or item.
The simulation consists of a statistical model for regular ship traffic, based on AIS statistics, and a physical ship simulator model that is built to be very computationally efficient, enabling thousands of simulations in the assessments. The model simulates different accidental events, such as drifting ship, miss of turn etc. affected by different winds and current conditions.
The simulations resulted in a good understanding of the relevant conditions in the area and gave a robust basis for decisions for the County Municipality. |
